Once you've finished creating your website, you're probably going to want visitors to see all your hard work. However, if you haven't bought an SSL certificate, that might be a bit more difficult than normal. Modern web browsers - Chrome in particular - are currently pushing websites to have an HTTPS connection. All sites that run on HTTP, meaning they don't have an SSL certificate, will have a "Not Secure" warning appear in the URL bar next to the site's name. Many browsers take it a step farther and show a warning message prior to entering the website in question.
Not Secure Warnings
Without an SSL certificate, your website is susceptible to various attacks from malware or potentially dangerous visitors. An SSL certificate provides an extra layer of security to your website and any online transactions that are made on it by encrypting all sensitive information. Running a website without a certificate is not only dangerous but will also trigger a "Not Secure" warning on all browsers.
Prior to registering for an SSL certificate, all visitors trying to access your website will be visited by a warning telling them that their connection is not secure. In order to continue onto the site, they'll have to physically acknowledge that they understand and want to continue, which has been purposefully hidden for your safety.
The warning will look like this in Chrome:
In order to move past this, you have to click on the Advanced option and then on the link that appears underneath.
The link will then redirect you to your website.
Please note that once you click on the link, the Not a Private Connection message will not pop up again, however, the URL bar will still show the red Not Secure message until your website has a valid SSL certificate.
Your URL bar will look like this:
If these warnings are popping up and you have already registered an SSL certificate for your website, make sure to wait for the designated amount of time (for example EV certificates will take 5-7 business days to go through the verification process) and then go through your settings to make sure there were no issues during registration.
