Upgrading your PHP version of WordPress

  • 10 April 2019

For those not familiar with web development, PHP is the scripting language on which WordPress is built. In order to profit from a fast and secure version of WordPress, you need to have the latest version of PHP. Running an outdated version of PHP will open up your website to vulnerabilities or security issues that have already been addressed by newer versions.

The New Minimum PHP Requirement For WordPress

The WordPress team has recently announced that they will raise the minimum PHP requirement to version 5.6. While the latest version of PHP is 7.3, WordPress wants to give their users time to upgrade their systems to newer versions.

This means that PHP versions 5.5 and older will not receive the same level of WordPress support (or support at all if they're too outdated).

How to Configure Your PHP version

Nuagerie offers advanced Cloud Web Hosting plans that come with cPanel included. Using this powerful control panel, you can view and upgrade your PHP version easily directly from your web browser.

In order to make sure that your WordPress installation is functioning optimally, make sure to upgrade your PHP to (at least) version 5.6 - though it is strongly recommended to update all the way to at least 7.

Currently, our servers are set to PHP version 7 automatically, however, you can choose to go up to version 7.2 from your private cPanel account.
