New WordPress version 5.0 - "Bebo"

  • 6 December 2018

The highly anticipated WordPress 5.0 has finally been released. Named in respect for the trailblazing Cuban Jazz musician Bebo Valdés, the "Bebo" version comes with a huge amount of creative power for all WordPress users.

The new WordPress Editor

The New Editor

The new WordPress editor has been seriously upgraded, giving it a more user-friendly feeling with block-based editing capabilities. All users have much more flexibility displaying their content, regardless of the design experience they have.

The new block-based editor won’t change the way your content looks to your visitors. Instead, it will let you insert any type of multimedia easily and any way you want. Each piece of content will have its own block or distinct wrapper for easy maneuvering. If you’re more comfortable using HTML and CSS, then don't worry - the blocks won’t stand in your way. They were created with user interaction in mind, so you don't have to worry about digging through complicated HTML to make your site perfect.

WordPress has already created over 16 block functionalities and will continue to add more over time. For those of you that create websites for clients, the block features will allow you to create reusable blocks and let your clients add in new content without fear of breaking their site.

The New Theme

Included in the release is a whole new default WordPress theme, Twenty Nineteen, that already comes with the blocks incorporated. Your next WordPress site will be the easiest and most well put-together site yet! The default theme uses the block editor extensively, so whatever you put in the content editor will show up the way you wanted on your site. Twenty Nineteen has already been configured for all devices, which means that not only will it be beautiful, but your website will be highly adaptative to all size screens.

New Developer Options

Blocks provide an easy way for users to change content directly, while also guaranteeing that the content structure cannot be quickly disrupted through accidental code modifications. This lets the developer control the final product, creating polished and semantic markup preserved through edits and not easily broken.

Developers can now benefit from a large collection of APIs and interface elements that let them create blocks with user-friendly controls for your clients. Making use of these components will accelerate development and offer a more consistent, usable, and available interface for everyone.

The brand-new block paradigm opens up a whole new world of creativity when solving for user needs. With the combined block insertion flow, it's easier for your customers to find and use blocks for all types of content. Web developers can now concentrate on executing their vision and providing rich editing experiences instead of fussing with difficult APIs.

The New or the Old?

If you're not sure about the new changes, don't worry! The Classic WordPress Editor will still be available through 2021, which gives you plenty of time to get used to "Bebo".

To keep the old editor interface, visit the Plugins page on your WordPress Dashboard and click the Install Now button next to "Classic Editor". Once it is finished installing, just click on Activate and the familiar Classic Editor (and its extensions) will be yours to use.
