How to clear your computer’s DNS cache

The DNS cache temporarily stores answers that connect domain names with network addresses. Clearing it can help when one device retains an old answer after a DNS change. It is not a general fix for HTTP 404 errors, expired certificates or a website outage.

Check before changing anything

Record the exact address and error message. Compare another device or network. A problem affecting one computer may involve its cache, browser or configuration; a different result alone does not establish the cause.

Windows

  1. Open Terminal or Command Prompt with administrator rights.
  2. Run ipconfig /flushdns.
  3. Wait for confirmation, close and reopen the browser, then check the site.

This clears the Windows DNS client cache. It does not change the domain’s DNS records or renew your internet subscription.

Linux using systemd-resolved

If your distribution uses systemd-resolved, resolvectl status shows its resolver configuration and sudo resolvectl flush-caches clears its caches. If the service or command is unavailable, consult your distribution’s documentation instead of restarting unrelated services.

macOS and other devices

The procedure depends on the system and version. Start by saving your work and restarting the device, then follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance. Check compatibility before using a command written for an older macOS release.

If the problem continues

The browser, network or provider may maintain separate caches with their own lifetimes. Clearing the local cache cannot force those caches to expire. Send support the domain, time, error and comparisons you performed; avoid publicly sharing an inventory of your connections.

Plan a DNS change with Nuagerie

For a website or email move, success also means that your everyday work continues: the website reaches the right destination and messages arrive in the right mailbox. Our team can help check the relevant records and distinguish a cached answer from a setting that needs correcting.

In your Client Area, identify the domain, planned change and services that need to stay available. If you are preparing a move to Nuagerie, tell us about your current setup so we can plan the steps and useful checks before changing DNS.
