How to prepare a backup of your website

A useful backup must recover the right data and remain accessible when the website is unavailable. Before a significant change, identify the files, database and other components your application needs.

Choose the appropriate copy

The available cPanel backup tool may offer partial copies or a full archive. A full .tar.gz backup is not a proprietary format, but restoring the complete account is not a cPanel account feature; request assistance from the provider.

Available tools, including any JetBackup access, depend on your service. Check which copies actually exist and their dates before starting a restoration.

Create and retain the backup

  1. Choose a suitable period for the site’s activity. For an application receiving writes, plan a method that keeps files and database data consistent.
  2. Check available space before generating an archive.
  3. Download the copy to a separate, protected location with restricted access.
  4. Check that the archive is readable and includes the expected components.
  5. Remove temporary archives from hosting after verification and according to the service rules.

Accumulating backups inside the hosting account consumes its quota and can cause archives to be included in later backups. A copy stored only alongside the website does not cover losing access to that account.

Plan recovery

Record each copy’s date, scope and location. Test restoration in a separate environment where possible. Before replacing production data, confirm what will be overwritten and how recent changes will be preserved.

See the cPanel documentation and Nuagerie security policy for the applicable framework.

Plan recovery around your business

An online store, a brochure website and an internal application have different recovery needs. Identify which data changes during the day, how much work would need to be re-entered after a restore and which functions must return first. Those answers help determine the appropriate copies and recovery approach.

Before an update or restore on a Nuagerie service, open a request in your Client Area with the website, data to protect and planned deadline. Our team can help confirm the available restore points and the scope of the work. For testing changes, also see our staging guide.
