How to choose a PHP version for your website

The PHP version should suit your application and receive appropriate security maintenance. An older version offered in an interface is not automatically the best choice for your website.

Before changing it

  • Check the requirements of your CMS, extensions and application code.
  • Prepare a recoverable backup of files and the database.
  • Test the intended version in a development environment where possible.
  • Record the current configuration and plan how to revert if the application fails.

Using MultiPHP Manager

When this tool is available for your account, open cPanel through your Client Area and find MultiPHP Manager. Select the affected domain, choose a suitable available version and apply the change.

Check whether the domain uses an explicit version or an inherited setting. Available versions and options depend on the service configuration.

Using CloudLinux PHP Selector

PHP Selector is a separate tool. Depending on configuration, its scope can include several sites in the account. Do not assume a change affects only the domain you have in mind. Confirm the applicable setting when several sites share the hosting account.

After the change

Check public pages, administration, forms and important features. Scheduled tasks may use a separate PHP executable and need their own verification. Review errors without leaving a public diagnostic file that exposes server configuration.

Give your PHP upgrade a clear purpose

Moving to a maintained version can prepare your website for future CMS and plugin updates. Include the functions your business relies on in your checks: enquiry forms, bookings, payments or connections to another tool. Our team can help clarify the hosting setting and compatibility points to review with your developer.

In your request, identify the CMS, important plugins, intended version and preferred date. Prepare the tests with our staging guide. If an older application needs adaptation, tell us about the modernization project so its steps can be defined.
