Website, account or server backup: understand the difference

Before requesting a backup, identify what you need to recover. A website copy, a hosting account archive and a server backup address different needs. The right choice depends on the data involved and the service you use.

Understand the three levels

  • The website or application: its files and, when it uses one, its database. WordPress needs both. Copying the website files alone does not back up its database.
  • The hosting account: a broader scope that may include several websites, mailboxes and settings. Check the archive’s actual contents and exclusions. A cPanel account backup is not an image of the entire server.
  • The server: recovering its environment and services is a system administration task. cPanel system-file backups are separate from account backups and cannot be restored through a customer cPanel account. For a dedicated or cloud server, confirm who manages this recovery under your service arrangement.

Define the need with the right people

The website owner knows which functions must return and which recent data must be preserved. Your developer can identify application dependencies. Our team can check the options available for the Nuagerie service concerned and the scope of any intervention. Having panel access does not mean you administer the server or its backup policy.

Before a significant change, confirm what is covered, which recovery points exist, who can start a restore and how the result will be checked. Any JetBackup access depends on the features enabled; it does not establish the same backup frequency or retention period for every service.
