In December 2022, Nuagerie updated the PHP versions offered in its cPanel/WHM hosting environment and adopted PHP 8.1 as the default. This was part of the ongoing modernization of the software foundation used by our customers’ websites and applications.
A more recent default version
The default version provides a reference runtime for the hosting environment. Updating it helps accommodate evolving application requirements and newer generations of the language. It does not replace a compatibility review for each website: an older plugin or a custom application may require additional preparation.
PHP 8.2 was being prepared for our environment at the time of this update. Older branches were still listed for compatibility needs, but availability should not be confused with continued support from the PHP project.
Preparing changes at the application level
A PHP change should be accompanied by checks of the website itself. Its content management system, plugins and theme need to be compatible with the selected version. Forms, sign-in, scheduled tasks and, for an online store, the checkout process deserve particular attention.
We recommend having a usable backup and, where possible, testing in a separate environment before changing a production website. This approach helps identify compatibility problems before they affect visitors or business operations.
Maintenance continues as versions evolve
PHP branches follow the maintenance lifecycle defined by the project. When selecting a version today, consult the official schedule of supported versions together with your application’s requirements. The Nuagerie team can help you review your configuration and plan the steps involved in an upgrade.
Make the upgrade a manageable project
A runtime upgrade is easier to coordinate when someone owns the application checks and the business knows what needs validating. Nuagerie can help you review the environment offered by your hosting service, while your application requirements guide the version choice and any related development work.
For a planned transition, note the site address, the proposed PHP version, important integrations and the period you would prefer for the work. Identify who can confirm that the key customer journeys behave correctly. These details help prepare a change that fits your team’s availability and the site’s operating needs.
