The Malware Cleanup module
Malware Cleanup can remove malicious code from users’ files, or delete those files entirely if they cannot be repaired. Cleanup is user-assisted: a person has to select the files to clean.
Malware Cleanup is designed to reduce the risk of information loss and website malfunction after cleanup. It backs up a contaminated file before cleaning it and trims the file rather than removing it. This backup lets you bring the file back to the state it was in before cleanup. Backups are kept in special folders outside user home directories and should not be managed manually. The names of these files are not altered.
In the Malware settings, you can choose when the module should remove or trim a file. Trimming is the default option.
You can also clean up all malicious files on your system. The Cleanup all button tries to remove harmful content from all files detected as infected or quarantined. Files flagged by Imunify’s other malware engines can also be cleaned or trimmed during the process.
Older entries are removed automatically when the backup of the cleaned file is deleted (by default, every 14 days).
What the module looks for
The cleanup engine detects and cleans any content that could be considered malicious, such as web shells, backdoors, phishing pages, virus injections, doorway pages, droppers, miners, uploaders and similar tools.
The engine may sometimes skip certain files. Possible causes include:
- The infected file or its folder is write-protected, so Malware Cleanup cannot modify or delete it. Contact us for more information.
- The infected file was missing or unreadable at the time of the cleanup attempt. Check that the file is in place and that its permissions are correct.
