Hosting and cPanel

How to check the version of your cPanel

What is cPanel?

cPanel is a web hosting control panel that lets web hosting owners manage their sites from a web-based user interface. It gives all web hosting users a user-friendly visual interface for managing their Linux server. This highly popular control panel also provides tools designed to streamline the running and maintenance of a website. cPanel’s tiered structure allows for different levels of access, which means administrators and end users can control different aspects of the server and the site directly in their web browser.

You usually reach cPanel over HTTPS on port 2083 (for example https://example.com:2083) or by adding /cpanel to your domain (https://example.com/cpanel), depending on the server configuration. WHM, the server administration interface, uses port 2087.

Checking your version

Knowing your cPanel & WHM version helps before you follow a version-specific procedure or ask for help. There are several ways to check it.

Method 1

The easiest way to check your cPanel version is to use the WHM dashboard for your server. If you have WHM access, for example with a Nuagerie reseller account or on a server you administer, log in to WHM and look at the top-right corner of your screen. There, you will see your server name, the version of cPanel & WHM and the current load averages on your server.

Method 2

On a server you administer, with SSH access, you can also check the installed version with this command:

Shell
/usr/local/cpanel/cpanel -V

Method 3

Also over SSH, the version is recorded in a file on the server. This file sits outside your home directory, so cPanel’s File Manager cannot open it.

Shell
cat /usr/local/cpanel/version

The cPanel interface

One of the many reasons cPanel is so popular is the wide range of features available to all users.

The File Manager interface makes it easy to upload, create, delete and modify files without the need for FTP or other third-party applications.

The Images interface helps you manage images according to your needs. cPanel makes it easy to view, resize and convert image files directly from your web browser.

The Web Disk feature gives access to the website’s files. Once you have created a web disk, you can access your server’s files as easily as files on your computer’s local drive. You can even access your files directly from your mobile phone.

The Backup Wizard provides step-by-step instructions for creating backups of your server. cPanel makes it easy to keep your backups up to date.
