Domains and DNS

What happens once my domain expires?

An expired domain can interrupt your website, email and other services that use its name. The timing and recovery options depend on the domain extension, the registrar’s terms and the domain’s current status. Act promptly rather than assuming that a fixed number of extra days is available.

Understand the domain’s current status

For generic extensions such as .com, ICANN describes several possible stages in its expired-registration guidance:

  • Post-expiration renewal: the registrar may still allow renewal. The available period and price depend on its terms; continued website access does not prove that the domain has been renewed.
  • Redemption or restoration: after deletion by the registrar, an eligible domain may enter a recovery period. Restoration must be requested through the registrar and can involve an additional fee.
  • Final deletion: once the recovery opportunity has ended, ordinary renewal may no longer be possible. If the name becomes available again, someone else may register it. Waiting to buy it back is not a reliable recovery plan.

These stages are not a universal countdown from the expiry date. Country-code extensions follow their own rules. For a .CA domain, consult CIRA’s explanation of expiration and recovery and confirm the options with the company managing your registration.

What to do now

  1. Open the account you normally use to manage the domain, using a known address or bookmark. Confirm the exact domain name, displayed status and renewal information.
  2. If renewal is available, review the term and price before completing it. If you already paid, retain the payment confirmation and ask support to check the registration status.
  3. If the account shows redemption, deletion, or no renewal option, contact the registration provider promptly. Request confirmation of the available recovery procedure, deadline and total charges for this specific domain.
  4. After renewal or restoration is confirmed, verify the new expiry date and test the website and email. Service recovery can require further checks; a payment receipt alone does not confirm that every service is working.

ICANN’s renewal FAQ explains why options and fees vary. Keep contact and payment details current, review any automatic-renewal setting, and use a calendar reminder before the next expiry date. An alternative contact address can help if email on the affected domain stops working.

Get help with a Nuagerie-managed domain

Contact Nuagerie support with the domain name, the status displayed in your account and any renewal reference. We can check the available next step for a domain managed through us. Do not send your password or transfer authorization code. If another provider manages the registration, that provider must confirm its renewal or restoration options.
